The Monkey King is an anthropomorphic monkey relatively the size of an average human teenager with brown fur covering his body and tail, and peach fur for his torso, and peach skin for his face, ears, hands, and feet. The fur on his head is slicked back, tied in red ribbons. Monkey King is based on a true story of a famous Chinese monk, Xuanzang, spending over a decade walking to India, the birthplace of Buddhism, to retrieve the Buddhist holy book to translate into Chinese. The story took place during the Tang Dynasty, where a monkey was born from a stone and gained supernatural power though Taoist practices.

The Monkey King (Sun Wukong) is one of the most popular or widely known Chinese legends. It is considered one of the four great classic novels that was written during the Ming Dynasty (c.1500 – 1582). The story is about the journey one monk has but the trickery and comedy of the Monkey King is what captures the heart of the audience. The legends are a blend of folklore, religion, allegory, history and satire. As colected in the 100 chapters of Journey to the West in the 16th century by Wu Cheng’en (a scholar-official) they can be read as one long, eventful fairytale.
